Real life about me behind the cut. Skip if you want! )

I originally set up a Dreamwidth account because it seemed like a lot of the old LJ-style fandom stuff moved here. I'm still trying to get the hang of the platform mostly because I am out of practice with blogging. Please bare with me as I try to get back in the swing of things.

I tend to be a bit of a fandom-hopper. I follow the dopamine, lol. I do have a few standards that I tend to drift back to like the MCU and Game of Thrones. I was once always comfortable in the Harry Potter fandom, but I absolutely do not agree with the author's stances on trans rights and find myself avoiding it more often than not. I may one day post my very complicated feelings on HP, but that's a whole other can of worms.

[archiveofourown.org profile] Meilan_Firaga is where you'll find my fanfic and one or two original works.

If you need my date of birth for age verification or some other reason it is March 22, 1988.

If you're looking for information about my fic/art preferences for an exchange, event, or just because that can be found HERE. It probably needs an update (perpetually, lol).

I have been almost completely absent from fandom since 2023. Honestly, my fandom participation has been declining for even longer than that. Some of that is just life--job stress, social life, relationship--but there are definitely other contributing factors. My anxiety is a big one. I kinda just...fell off the face of the earth. Stopped checking in on Discord, stopped posting any of my own work, and stopped commenting on the works of others. I had (have?) the best kind of fandom friends, and I just disappeared on them. Every time I think about going back I have this little voice in my head screaming that no one will want to hear from me or have me in their fandom spaces after I just abandoned them without warning.

Now, I am 100% aware that kind of thinking is just my mental illness talking, but logic and mental health don't always play nicely together. So, I've decided to make it a personal goal to reconnect with fandom in the coming year. In the interest of working with my brain instead of against it, I'm not putting a whole lot of restrictions or guidelines on what "reconnecting" means. I just want to be present and enjoy fandom again.

Most of the time I do need some kind of external/additional motivator tied to things. Gotta make my ADHD think it's a challenge or there's no dopamine in it, lol. Luckily, [community profile] goals_on_dw is running a super cool "Fannish 50 in 2025" challenge. The goal is to make 50 fandom related posts in 2025. Beyond making sure they deal with fandom, there is no restriction on the type of post. It could be a top ten list or a post linking to a 100k word fanfic. Lots of possibility for variety, which I'm hoping will keep me from feeling like it's a chore. I'll be using this post as a sort of masterlist/index of my fifty fandom related posts throughout the year.

I'm very excited to get back into something that's brought me joy for so much of my life. Wish me luck!

[community profile] creativegolf is a low-pressure fanworks challenge based on 9 Card Golf. Put simply, the goal is to create one fanwork for each prompt and to tie the fills for each column together in some way. You can check out the full rules for what counts as a fill, how columns can be tied together, and how scores are calculated here. There is no deadline, which I'm hoping will be helpful for me as I try to ease my way back into creating fanworks. Below is my prompt table for this challenge as well as my current score and a masterlist below the cut where I'll be linking each of my fills.

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3
1. Bibliomancy 1. the meaning of expensive taste1. Mercury
2. Reincarnation / Meet in every life 2. Clairvoyant / seeing the future 2. a moment like this
3. Amethyst3. you belong with me3. Space / scifi AU

Current Score:
Fills Completed: 0 / 9
Columns Completed: 0 / 3

Wish me luck! I'm really looking forward to working with these prompts!

I may be cheating a little bit to make this work for me and my brain, but I'm combining the first two challenges for [community profile] snowflake_challenge into one post and also using it as my first Fannish 50 entry for 2025.

Snowflake Challenge #1 - Update your fandom information.
I completed this one on January 1st and updated the Snowflake Challenge community on that day, but I never actually posted about it here. I did a full overhaul of my profile both on here and at [archiveofourown.org profile] Meilan_Firaga on AO3. I also did a big edit on my DW pinned intro post. There are still probably some things that could use an update (looking right at you, gift preferences post), but I'm happy with how these three places reflect my current fandom involvement now.

Snowflake Challenge #2 - In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story.
This is the part that I'm using for Fannish 50 today as well. I think a lot about how I got involved in fandom, but I've never actually sat and wrote it all down before. I'm closer to 40 than 30 these days, and I don't think I realized just how long of a history I have with fandom before both on my own and as a member of online communities. This is bound to get wordy, so for the sake of saving everyone's Reading Page I've put it all behind the cut below.

Happy New Year!

I'm sitting in my partner's old bedroom at his mother's home as I write this, gearing up to drive back to Ohio tomorrow. It's hard to believe that 2025 is already here. I could swear that October was just yesterday. Since it is here, though, I want to set my intentions for the year in writing so I have something to refer back to when my swiss cheese memory fails me.

One of the big goals that I want to accomplish this year is to reconnect with fandom, and I spent the biggest chunk of December trying to figure out how I want to go about that. I think, for the most part, the way I'm going to do it will be to make time to participate in fandom every day. Even if I'm just leaving a heart react on someone's meme, I want to engage with something in fandom every day if I'm going to succeed at reviving this part of my life. For me, part of the problem is that I tend to go full tilt, sign up for too much, and then freeze up when I can't accomplish the massive, lofty goals that I've set for myself. With that in mind, I've set myself smaller fandom goals in the hopes that they will be more achievable.

My Five Fandom Goals for 2025
  1. Fannish50 - Make 50 fandom-related posts in a year. My master post for this challenge is here.
  2. Finish In Bitter Winter's Hands - This Game of Thrones Sansa/Tormund WIP has become some sort of specter that haunts me. I love this story. I've gotten incredible reviews on it, but now I'm so afraid of disappointing the readers that I freeze up. It's time to get it done and out there so I can stop fretting over it. The outline is only a dozen chapters. If I can knock out one a month I'll be sitting pretty on this project.
  3. Write and post fic monthly - Whether it's a 100-word drabble or something more substantial, I just want to start putting my work out there again. I'd like to be at a point to do it weekly, but I don't want to impose that requirement on myself and then fall to pieces when I have a busy week and don't have time.
  4. Complete 5 challenges - I'm setting no requirements as to the type of challenge. It can be any 5 fandom-related challenges.
  5. Find a new Harry Potter - My feelings on HP are, like many people my age, immensely complex. Maybe one day I'll do a nice long post about it. The important thing is that I vehemently disagree with the author's stances on trans rights, and I no longer want to have HP as a bread-and-butter fandom. For the longest time HP was the fandom I could always write for. Give me almost any pairing and I can hammer out a fic in very little time. I need to get to that point with another fandom, and I don't know which one I'll end up going with.

I mentioned in a previous post that I had a nasty habit of signing up for exchanges and overwhelming myself in years previous. I still want to make sure I'm avoiding that sort of scenario, but I have signed up for two challenge events besides Fannish50 to try and give myself a little nudge. Neither event is an exchange, which means no one will be hurt if I need to back off. Further info behind the cuts below!

Thank you so much for your interest in creating for me! I'm notoriously easy to please, so don't stress yourself too much. I want you to have as much fun writing for me as I'm going to have reading what you've written. For the most part I don't have prompts on here just because I'm open to reading most things.

Today's listening. Having some major flashbacks to my early LJ days. If you need to estimate how old I am, know that I remember this mess.
